Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf Biography

Mohammad Yousuf (formerly Yousuf Youhana, born 27 August 1974, Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan) is a Pakistani cricketer who has been a member of the Pakistani national cricket team since 1998. He is best known for his achievement in 2006 when he broke the great West Indian batsman, Sir Vivian Richards', world record for the most Test runs in a single calendar year. Prior to his conversion to Islam in 2005, Yousuf was one of the few Christians to play in the Pakistan national cricket team. He made his Test debut against South Africa at Durban and ODI debut against Zimbabwe at Harare. He has scored over 9,000 ODI runs at an average of 43.63 (2rd highest batting average among Pakistani batsmen after Zaheer Abbas and 6,770 Test runs at an average of 55.49 (highest batting average amongst all Pakistani batsmen) with 23 Test centuries. He has the record of scoring the most runs without being dismissed in ODIs, 405 against Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe in 2002-03. He has also scored a 23-ball fifty in ODIs, and a 68-ball hundred. In Tests he has scored a 27-ball fifty, which is 3rd fastest by any player. He was top scorer during the successive years of 2002 and 2003 in the world in ODIs. In 2004, he scored a memorable 111 against the Australians in the Boxing Day Test. In December 2005, he scored 223 against England at Lahore, also earning him the man of the match award. Seven months later in July 2006, when Pakistan toured England, he scored 202 and 48 in the first Test, again earning himself the man of the match award. He followed up with 192 in the third Test at Headingley and 128 in the final Test at the Oval. Yousuf was named CNN-IBNs Cricketer of the Year for 2006, ahead of the likes of Australian captain Ricky Ponting, West Indies Brian Lara, Australian spinner Shane Warne, South Africas bowling spearhead Makhaya Ntini and Sri Lankas Muttiah Muralitharan. He was selected as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in the 2007 edition. Yousuf became the fourth recipient of the ICC 'Test Cricketer of the Year' award for 2007, he scored 944 runs at an average of 94.40 including five centuries and two fifties in just 10 innings and that was enough to be awarded the honour ahead of Kevin Pietersen and Ricky Ponting. Yousuf was also named in the 2007 Test team of the Year alongside compatriot Mohammad Asif. A year that started on a promising note, Yousuf carried it forward to break two world records both held earlier by West Indian great Sir Vivian Richards. The 32-year-old smashed an unparalleled 1788 runs in just 11 Test matches with the help of nine centuries his second record taking him beyond the Windies great yet again. Yousuf is known for his ability to score runs at exceptional rate through his great technique and composed strokeplay. Although capable of hitting the ball hard, Yousuf is quick between the wickets, although he is prone to being run out. Yousuf is a skillful infielder, with a report prepared in late 2005 showing that since the 1999 Cricket World Cup, he had effected the ninth highest number of run-outs in ODI cricket of any fieldsman. He is also distinguished by his characteristic celebration after hitting one hundred runs for his country, where he prostrates in thankfulness to Allah in the direction of Mecca. He has observed this act (known as the Sajdah) recently since his conversion to Islam.

Muhammad Aamir (born 13 April 1992) is a Pakistani left-arm fast bowler, hailing from Gujar Khan, Punjab. He is a highly thought of young prospect, making his international debut at the age of just 17 at 2009 World T20 and played in every match in the process of helping Pakistan win the World Cup. Aamir was youngest player to be competing in the tournament. His debut was against England. He is mainly noted for his whippy action which generates notably quick pace and swing. Aamir was first picked out as a pace prospect by the renowned Pakistani fast bowler Wasim Akram at a pace camp back in 2007. Aamir, then 15 years old, went on a tour of England with the Pakistan U19 side and was one of the leading bowlers, taking regular wickets at a low average. Aamir then played in a tri-nation tournament featuring Sri Lanka and England, he again excelled with his pace and swing bowling. Due to injury he played only a limited part in the U19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008. His debut domestic season resulted in him taking 55 first-class wickets for NBP. He took a lot of top order wickets and those of players in the national side. This strong domestic form resulted in him being selected for the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup. In the final of the Twenty20 World Cup Aamir bowled a wicket maiden in the opening over of the match, taking the wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan who was later named player of the tournament. Pakistan legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram expressed his concerned for the future of Pakistan cricket in the current security situation but says the talent is still being produced in his country. “We all, every Pakistani, is worried,” Akram said in the weekly ICC Cricket World audio show. “Until some teams eventually start touring Pakistan then only Pakistan cricket will flourish. There’s a lot of talent there. We showed that during the ICC World Twenty20. Talent is very much there but first and foremost, they have to play more cricket,” he further said.Pakistan recently introduced a 17-year old Mohammad Aamir in the ICC World Twenty20 and his brilliant show in the tournament has drawn munificent praise and earned him a maiden call up to the Test team for the series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan Cricket Board handed a central contract of category ‘C’.

nternational Debut: 2009

The Karachi born youngster, Shahzaib Hasan made his debut for the Karachi Zebras in the 2008-2009 season. And only a year later, got a call up from the Pakistan Cricket Board for the Asia Cup. The 20 year old believes he is ready to play in One Day International cricket. “I am confident that I can play well in the 50-over format of the game. While I have no international experience at the 50-over format, I'm sure that I can turn my recent good domestic form into runs at international level and I am ready for the challenge of 50-over international cricket.”, he told the media in Pakistan.

Hasan is known for hard hitting openers and in the shorter formats of the game can maintain a high strike rate. In his first few opening performances for the Karachi Zebras he made 250 runs at a rate of 96.11. He was an uncapped player in the 2009 ICC World Cup, but Salman Butts poor performance earned him his Twenty20 International debut. He started against New Zealand scoring 35 runs off 28 balls. He kept his place in the team for the final against Sri Lanka, contributing by scoring 19 runs. Pakistan won the 2009 ICC World Cup.

Hasan who was selected in the 15 man squad travelling to Sri Lanka on the 15th of July, trained with the Pakistan squad at the national training camp in Lahore, at Gaddafi stadium. He admitted the training was tough, especially in the heat, but that he was enjoying himself. He revealed that the team was put through strenuous net sessions, fielding practice and the players got individual attention from the coaches.

Hasan praised Captain Shahid Afridi, who gave the youngster advice ahead of his first ever One Day International. Hasan has only ever played four Twenty20 internationals and was looking forward to the tournament so he could impress his captain and Pakistan legend, Javed Miandad. Miandad gave Hasan valuable advice on his batting style and other technical information, which Hasan appreciated. He said that he planned to focus more on “working the ball around the field instead of looking for big shots all the time.” He believed that Pakistan had a good chance of claiming the Asia Cup, being hosted by Sri Lanka. “We’ve got nothing in our minds but victory and this is the attitude which would drive us forward during the tournament”, he stated.

Since the Pakistani team has not been performing well, including Hasan, other surprise players have also been called up; Shoaib Akhtar, Asad Shafiq, Abdul Rehman, Imran Farhat and Umar Amin. There are already too many problems in the Pakistan camp, injury wise and otherwise, and the Pakistan Cricket Board hopes that with the inclusion of these players, Pakistan will perform better in future tournaments.

Hasan was also one of the two uncapped players in the Pakistan squad for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20. He made his Twenty20 international debut in 2009 against New Zealand, and scored 35 off 28 balls. Like many of his more illustrious countrymen, Shahzaib Hasan was only in his teens when he was fast-tracked into the Pakistan team. A robust and ungainly opening batsman, he enjoyed healthy returns in his debut first-class season, scoring 607 runs in ten matches for Karachi Blues in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. In domestic one-dayers, he has scored 250 runs in seven games at a strike rate of 96.11, which saw him drafted into the squad for the 2009 World Twenty20 and he came highly recommended by Rashid Latif and Basit Ali, men with a keen eye for Karachi's talent. He doesn't mind a slog on either side of the wicket and hits the ball hard. Though he didn't set the world on fire, a couple of useful mid-sized Twenty20 scores at the top of the order helped Pakistan to unexpected success. Alongside Kamran Akmal, he provided Pakistan with solid starts, never moreso than in the final against Sri Lanka.

Azhar Ali

Azhar Ali Biography

Full Name: Azhar Ali
Date of Birth: Feb 19, 1985, Lahore, Punjab
Major Team: Pakistan, Khan Research Laboratories, Lahore, Lahore Eagles, Lahore Lions, Pakistan A
Playing Roll: Batsman
Batting Style: Right
Bowling Style: Legbreak
An opening batsman by trade, Azhar has worked his way steadily up Pakistan's domestic scene since 2006. That was the season he began opening regularly for Khan Research Laboratories, a move that fetched him two hundreds and two fifties in five matches, and he hasn't looked back. In four seasons since, he's been averaging 40-plus with 11 hundreds, commendable figures in a country where opening is a modern-day curse.

All of his runs have been made with a compact technique, designed to get behind the line of each ball. Observers say he gets into a tangle against the shorter ball often but his patience is key. On an A tour to Australia in 2009, he twice made five-hour 70s against an attack that included Doug Bollinger, Clint McKay and Jason Krejza. That series propelled him into senior team focus and a solid, if not spectacular 2009-10 season, coupled with a move to look beyond Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf, brought about a richly-deserved Test debut - in the middle order - at Lord's against Australia.
Azhar Aliis a Pakistani cricketer. A right-hand batsman, who also bowls leg-break, who has made a mark in the domestic circuit and has been awarded with a central contract by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Azhar Ali who started played at the tender age of 16 saw his dream turn to reality when he found his name in Pakistan squad for the Test series against Australia in 2010 and the joy was made all the more sweeter when he made his Test debut at the historic Lords.
The right hander who played his first game for Lahore in 2001 has over the years improved on his game and starting 2006 onwards was one of the most prolific scorers in domestic cricket. He went on to play for Pakistan A before being propelled into the national team when the team decided to look beyond veterans Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan. Following their loss in the 1st test, Ali played a fine knock of 51 as Pakistan chased down a tricky 180 set up by the Baggie Green in the 2nd test. His fine unbeaten 92 was also instrumental in Pakistan taking a priceless lead in a Test against England.
Normally an opener, he continues to bat at number 3 or in the middle order for Pakistan. A compact batsman with sound technique and enormous amounts of patience, Ali has all the attributes to be at the top level given he remains consistent. His next priority however will be to cement his place in ODIs and T20s.
